The 200-year-old kominka hotel “Onsen & Garden Nana” celebrates its long-awaited official opening!

In Kanazawa, Ishikawa, an ultimate healing retreat is born—where 200 years of history and natural scenery come to life

The 200-year-old kominka hotel “Onsen & Garden Nana” officially opens on April 27, 2024.
“Onsen & Garden Nana” is located in Nanamagari-machi, Kanazawa, Ishikawa. In April 2023, a married couple who had been working in Tokyo—one as a civil servant and the other as a company employee—moved to Nanamagari-machi. With the support of the local community, they built the facility and prepared to open, holding a pre-opening in November 2023, about one year after construction began in October 2022.
During the pre-opening period, the Noto Peninsula Earthquake struck. We continued activities such as offering free bathing to those affected and donating the entire proceeds from Ota Farm’s specially cultivated rice to the earthquake victims. Throughout this time, many guests—from within the prefecture as well as from across Japan and overseas—enjoyed the 200-year-old kominka space, the onsen, the café, and lunch.
Until now we had operated only the onsen and café, and only on weekends, but on April 27, 2024, we officially open as a hotel.

[Features of Onsen & Garden Nana]

① A relaxing space where you can be just as you are (ari-no-mama)

Everyone can relax and enjoy the space, the meals, the onsen, and connecting with others “just as they are” (ari-no-mama). The first floor is barrier-free, with a nursing room, a kids’ space, and a prayer room for Muslim guests. The second floor is a gallery where you can admire the large beams that have been in use for 200 years, and it can be used for groups, as a meeting space, or as a simple working space. There are three guest rooms, and every onsen bath is entirely private, so your privacy is protected.

・ “Keyaki (Zelkova) Room”: a private, free-flowing natural hot-spring open-air bath connected directly to the room, with a stone-built terrace
・ “Yamazakura (Mountain Cherry) Room”: use of two types of private open-air baths as often as you like, with a kids’ corner
・ “Kuri (Chestnut) Room”: use of two types of private open-air baths as often as you like, with a large bookshelf

② Dining that respects diversity, and tableware showcasing artisan craftsmanship

At “Onsen & Garden Nana,” we respect the dietary diversity of as many guests as possible.
We offer and accommodate menus so that people of various ages, religions, and cultures, or those with allergies to particular ingredients, can enjoy a meal together. Our tableware features finely designed pieces from across Japan—including local Ishikawa’s Kutani ware and Wajima lacquerware, as well as Onta ware from Oita, Shigaraki ware from Shiga, Mashiko ware from Tochigi, Seto ware from Gifu, and folk-craft pottery from Shimane—so you can savor the character of artisan handiwork.

③ A comfortable space that blends the flow of a 200-year-old kominka’s history with the nature-rich rural landscape

“Onsen & Garden Nana” is a 200-year-old kominka—formerly used as a toy museum—relocated from Okuhida. Its design lets you feel the flow of history while blending into the beautiful, nature-rich rural landscape of Nanamagari-machi, where the Asano River winds. Inside, the large beams that have been in use for 200 years sweep dynamically overhead, while modern, spacious diatomaceous-earth walls create a comfortable space suited to contemporary lifestyles. ④ An energy system pursuing decarbonization and resilience

“Onsen & Garden Nana” has introduced every feasible energy system to reduce carbon. First, a wood-fired boiler using local thinned timber provides hot water, and its heat powers underfloor heating throughout the building. As a result, no air conditioner or other heat source is needed even in midwinter. Second, hot water is produced by reusing waste heat from the high-temperature hot-spring water and by solar thermal energy. Third, we have installed solar power generation, storage batteries, an electric vehicle, and V2H (Vehicle to Home, a system that supplies electricity stored in an EV to the home or building). In the future, we also plan to introduce a groundwater-based snow-melting system and more. In the energy-intensive hotel industry, we build and operate systems for environmental coexistence that make the most of the region’s characteristics, and for regional resilience that can withstand disasters.

[Future Plans for Onsen & Garden Nana]

“Onsen & Garden Nana” hopes to realize four concepts—being “just as you are” (ari-no-mama), which is your true self; “diversity” that everyone can enjoy; “environmental regeneration and resilience” that cherishes nature and the environment and lets people live with peace of mind; and “nature and culture” that enrich and energize the heart—working together with the local community, partner companies, organizations, and specialists.

① Whole-house private stays for making memories with family and close friends

A trip everyone can enjoy together, including elderly guests and guests with disabilities. With a whole-house private booking that few other hotels can offer, we hope you will fully enjoy your time with family and close friends. Family trips from overseas are of course welcome. We hope you will spend special moments here on occasions such as wedding anniversaries, birthdays, and other celebrations.

② Onsen & wellness experiences

Beyond simply relaxing in the onsen, we offer wellness experiences in the “Nana” space where history and nature come together—including classes in yoga, herbal tea, and fermented-food making, as well as lunches of freshly harvested, pesticide-free local vegetables. We hope these become an opportunity for visitors to reclaim their true selves—”just as they are” (ari-no-mama).

③ Energy classes using the “Nana Power System” that children and adults alike can learn from

While touring the “Nana Power System”—the latest renewable-energy systems, including a wood boiler using local thinned timber, hot water from the hot spring and solar thermal energy, underfloor heating, solar power generation and storage batteries, and V2H—guests can consider and learn what resilient facilities and regional energy really are, in the energy classes we will hold.

④ Events that bring culture up close

The entrance hall of “Nana” is an atrium open up to the second floor, with excellent acoustics. Making use of this space, we would like to hold music events such as vocal recitals and classical trios and quartets, as well as cultural events such as folk performing arts and dance. Precisely because it is a small space, we hope that experiencing various cultures up close will help nurture a richer heart.

⑤ Seasonal events that make the most of Nanamagari’s nature

The starry skies of Nanamagari-machi are truly beautiful, and the winter skies especially so. In early summer, fireflies glow; in autumn, dragonflies fill the air; and this satoyama is home to various mountain animals such as wild boar and bears, and to plants that color the four seasons. We would like to hold seasonal events that make the most of Nanamagari’s nature, including New Year, Hina Matsuri (the Doll Festival), Tango-no-sekku (the Boys’ Festival), moon viewing, and Christmas.
